"Reformed" by Reform (Jazz Artist from Sweden)

Equal parts jazz and instrumental psychedelic / progressive rock, Reform's debut CD, "Reformed," charts a middle ground that ably fuses classic styles and influences - with an unusual twist. With a stellar 6-piece ensemble behind him, harmonica player Àlvaro Fernandez Gavíria's full, lower-octave playing serves as a primary lead instrument for much of the album. With studied restraint, Gaviria's tone – which recalls that of accomplished blues harp-stylist, Corky Siegel, approaches his instrument like a fusion-oriented Miles Davis, drawing out found harmonics within the framework of the band's rich and melodic songscapes. Guitarists Johan Glasson and Peter Åkerberg create the underpinning for Reform's – at times, Steely Dan-like jazz-rock sound, while drummers Anders Bergman and Åke Eriksson provide the forward thrust, effectively filling passages with deft and meticulous hits and textures. Not to go unmentioned, bassist Johan Glasson and keyboard player, Magnus Ramel's contributions are no less vital - and noteworthy, to Reform's decidedly adventurous leanings. Regardless of whether it's fusion jazz or spacey art rock, Reform's CD is a terrific set of original music by unique players with unbounded skills.

"Into the Night - Music for the Road" by Didge Extreme / David Blonski (Electronic Artist from California(CA))

Didge Extreme / David Blonski, talented composer and recording artist, serves up another terrific album titled "Into the Night - Music for the Road," comprised of energetic grooves of electronica and fusion dance music. Blonski's use of the didgeridoo is not only amazingly creative, but the way he incorporates the unique sound of this instrument with synthesized sounds is incredible. The first track, "Twilight Begins," launches off this disc with vigorous beats and the haunting tones of the drone-like didgeridoo with a mysterious charm. Exotic flutes on "Cruise Control" are rich in flavor and reverberate with an ambiance that is lively and full of life. You will sense the Middle Eastern tonality of the percussive drums on "Desert Crossroads" as it takes listeners to what seems like an oasis in a hot desert. "Alien Highway" and "Area 51" are titles that describe exactly what these songs would bring to mind: supernatural and mysterious sound effects. "Zoey and the Yok-Yok Man" by Alain Le Lait (Kids/Children Artist from Colorado (CO))

Singer/songwriter Alain Le Lait's latest release "Zoey and the Yok-Yok Man" is just the right musical entertainment for kids/family fun. Le Lait is quite a musical storyteller, as his amusing lyrics reflect the imaginary world of children's minds. His vocals are crisp and clean, and gleam with energy. The versatility in creating a fun-loving, kid-friendly environment is apparent in songs like "The Yok-Yok Man" and "Where is Zoey," which are catchy and vibrant. Young children show many types of fears but "I Don't Want to Go in the Garden" and "The Search Begins" has lyrics that help to overcome the obstacles of these frights. "The Full Moons" by Stephen W. Duncan (Classical Artist from Georgia (GA))

Stephen W. Duncan has ingeniously and eloquently mirrored the episodic events of the moon with his expressive and appropriately named album, "The Full Moons." Duncan has created an atmosphere of beautifully orchestrated compositions using various types of instrumentation with tones of classical and New Age finesse. Stunning and powerful, "Snow Moon," casts out a luscious melody highlighted by dazzling dynamics as the strings swell only to gently recede ever so softly. A bright and crisp piano cascades across the keys on "Flower Moon" while the Eastern tonality of various instruments gives way to a charming melody. Upbeat and lively, "Harvest Moon" impresses with country style with the banjo plucking away, while the percussion taps to a steady beat. The motif of Stephen W. Duncan's "The Full Moons" holds thought-provoking melodies with wonderful instrumentation of classical/New Age flair and would be a great addition to anyone who likes to hear and feel the sounds of tranquility.

"Diaspora" by Steve Lieberman the Gangsta Rabbi (Rock Artist from Long Island, New York(NY))

Raw and untamed, Steve Lieberman the Gangsta Rabbi's "Diaspora" CD is a challenging blast of noise-rock incitement as discordant and disjointed as it is unsettling. Like the late Wesley Willis, Lieberman – a one man sonic wrecking crew, shuns form and convention over the course of 18 tracks that, instead, rely on shock and awe bursts of scorching bass licks and howls of reverent fury to trace a Judaic arc from pre-Biblical times to the 21st century. With a voice that is both tormented and impenetrable, Lieberman sings of his Jewish heritage and faith with an atonal swagger that matches his frenzied grooves beat for beat. And while the whole may add up to a strained musicality (which, as fans of Sonic Youth might attest, can be an art form in itself), there is no denying that the multi-instrumentalist's dissonance (check out the frequent and jarring Jethro Tull-like flute interpolations) is neither accidental nor unschooled. Certainly not for everyone, Steve Lieberman the Gangsta Rabbi's "Diaspora" CD is, nevertheless, genuine and purposed; to that extent, "Diaspora" is no less than a work of self-actualization.

"Trying To Find My Way" by Fred Nash (Soul/Country Artist from California (CA))

Not that it matters, but the fact that Fred Nash's high tenor voice, which bears a resemblance to "I Can See Clearly Now" artist Johnny Nash, can't help but make a listener wonder if Fred is an offspring of the highly acclaimed former hit maker and impresario. That his CD-single, "Trying To Find My Way" has a similar soulful pop feel (albeit, without the reggae flavor), buoyed by an engaging, instantly captivating melody, only adds to the mystery. Regardless, "Trying To Find My Way," with its tasty, Steve Cropper-like guitar accompaniment accenting a spare, church-like arrangement, is a veritable throwback to an era when artists such as Nash, James, and Bobby were fashioning a crossover sound out of melding pop and soul sensibilities. Spiritual and meaningful, "Trying to Find My Way" is a fine debut CD-single from an artist who is likely to command attention not for his name, but for his escalating talent.

"Mama Roots" by Jerry Harris (Reggae Artist from New York (NY))

With his deep, gruff, and oh-so-soulful voice, Jerry Harris's "Mama Roots" CD is a funky reggae album with roots as deep as the singer's own legacy. The prolific composer, a fixture in the NY reggae scene since the '70s, has once again delivered an album of potent rhythm and soul, a propulsive mix of Roots Reggae and Rocksteady that reflects the legion of key Jamaican talents he has worked with in 4 decades as a leading and important Reggae artist. Highlights include "Just a Little Love We Need" and the topical "Global Warming," both owing a debt to Bob Marley-influenced grooves, but on "Mama" he shines with a Jimmy Cliff-like pop sensibility that transcends mere reggae-style labels. On "Mama Roots" Harris is once again backed by a stellar rhythm section, typically concise guitar fills, affecting horn parts, and backing vocals from a female chorus that is integral and subtle. Lyrically, there is a '70's-centric affirmative and positive social relevance running through all his songs as he alternately exhorts, cajoles, and pleads for the kind of world that seemed nearer to realization in those more innocent times. Nevertheless, there is nothing out of date about either Jerry Harris' message or the timeless brand of reggae he so effortlessly puts forth. Jerry Harris' "Mama Roots" CD continues an ageless tradition of intoxicating Reggae/Rocksteady music.

"Left for Dead" by Refracture (Electronic Artist from England)

House music is a mystifyingly multitude of Electronica / Dance music with numerous degrees of specialization and nuances. Beats Per Minute (BPM), textural definition and use / non-use of vocals are but a few of the defining characteristics that divide such subgenres of House as Dirty House, French House, and Electro House. Refracture's 3-song CD EP, "Left for Dead," blends elements of different subgenres - most notably Electro House - meaning, the music has the requisite BPM's, is anchored by propulsive bass lines, and features the sonic balance / blend associated with the House styles. All 3 tracks are catchy, infectious, and danceable as all get-out (i.e., very danceable indeed!). The title track, "Left for Dead" kicks things off with a slow-build synth swirl that hesitates before exploding into an irresistible groove punctuated by sonic squeaks and squalls that drop out of nowhere, keeping the mix continuously fresh. "Space Riot" and "Energy Flow" are both more immediate and insistent, but no less engaging, and each makes a case for being the best of the 3 mixes on the CD. If you're a House music connoisseur you will make up your own mind about the House attributes and qualifications of Refracture's "Left for Dead" EP, but if you're an Electronica music fan I think you'll find this CD delivers where it counts: on the dance floor.
